boris

i may have been a bit impatient
  before sending my last email

i had tried to upgrade
to the prerequisites for the project
  but had not seen
that you require a beta version make
which was not available in the normal release mirror
(i already had 3.1.0 bash)

upgrading make (3.81beta4) changed the nature of the problem

then a "make install" caused errors:

/bin/sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
/bin/sh: -c: line 0: `sed -e '1q' <'
/bin/sh: -c: line 0: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

finally, rtfming around
i realised i actually needed a patched make
which you provided on a different site (3.81beta1-bk5)

a tar, configure, make, install later
i try to build and

Segmentation fault

i certainly am beginning to understand the expediency
  of the target specific archives
but i fear i am already growing obstinate
and will have to defeat this challenge...

i notice in the NEWS
  mention of host_system and target_system
but setting these to "apple" does not behave as i expect

again i defer to more experienced eyes
(while frantically trying to debug it myself)
